              |     James Shields was born on  April
22nd 1916. Uncle Jim married Dorothy Congdon whose family owned
City Ice & Fuel. His Mother's sister Sarah was the office
manager. The Congdons were a well to do family from Cincinnati.
He gave my mother away at her wedding in 1951 (Since their
father had been dead for 9 years) Jim and Dorothy had one child
Guy who was named after her father. Jim was a good salesman for
a national company but when his territory was given to one his
boss's relatives and he was reassigned to the Plattsburg
territory he got himself transferred to Florida. He died July
16th 1974. His brother Martin was visiting me in Vallejo,
California at the time. When I told him of Jim's death he said
he expected it. Jim lived how he wanted and didn't modify his
life style to extend his life as he grew older. (Although  Junnie was
usually a cynic when it came to his siblings,  Jim died young
at 58, a year younger than his father and four years younger
than his sister Dot who died at 62 a year after he did) |

              | I visited them in Florida in the winter of 1971. When I rang
the bell Dot yelled to Jim "There's a hippy at the
door" to which Jim replied "That's just Louie".
My first night there they had a steak dinner and asked me if I
wanted ketchup. I told them I only put ketchup on things I
didn't like. The second night we had meat loaf and I didn't say
anything except ask for ketchup. I got to the Kennedy Space
Center but Disney World didn't open until 1972. |
