Born March 8th 1897. Staunch Irish Catholic Democrat (My mother once shook hands with Robert Kennedy and Helen stated "And you washed that hand?") |
I remember Great Aunt Helen, Goog was her nickname I had given her when I was small, she was goo goo and I was ooh wah. She was also called Nell by her namesake niece Helen Shields. She lived on Grove Avenue with her niece Helen and nephews Tom & Junnie (Marty). I remembers her and her youngest sister Sally wearing bright red lipstick as well as dead animals across their shoulders, complete with little feet and glass eyes. I remember screw post earrings, women didn't have pierced ear back then. She would take me on religious retreats to ? along the Mohawk River. They would also take bobby pins after blackheads behind my ears. When I was small she would give me buttered bread with sugar on it for a treat. On her kitchen counter she had a glass jar full of alcohol and a large syringe for her diabetes. We played Canasta. When she was dying she thanked my mother for her grand children. Out true grandmother, her sister Josephine was in an asylum in Poughkeepsie. |
