On the mainframes we used octals in dealing with the 30 bit word length.
(10 octals). I thought the machines were designed in octals instead of
hexadecimal but it turns out the word length was 30 bits supposedly
because Cray had problems fanning the signals out to any more bits than
30. That argument would not hold water for the mini computers of the time
the UNIVAC 1218 (CP-789) & 1219. They used 6 octals (18 bit word
lengths) |
