Univac 1206          (CP-642A)    Rep Card
Input/Output was performed between CPU Instructions on 30 bit parallel channels                                         The UNIVAC 1212  (CP642B) added a Square Root Instruction
On the mainframes we used octals in dealing with the 30 bit word length. (10 octals). I thought the machines were designed in octals instead of hexadecimal but it turns out the word length was 30 bits supposedly because Cray had problems fanning the signals out to any more bits than 30. That argument would not hold water for the mini computers of the time the UNIVAC 1218 (CP-789) & 1219. They used 6 octals (18 bit word lengths)
