Loon Lake/Vallejo
The (un) usual suspects. Joe, Barry and Kevin at Loon Lake Campground (Jay from the back)
It rained the two days I was at Loon, luckily not at night when I slept out on a cot. It had rained lightly Sunday night when I was at Icehouse but I just threw a tarp over the cot. Monday it rained hard enough to have streams running through camp. Joe and Jay's tent leaked.
Mare Island
Lower Napa River (Mare Island Strait) towards the Carquinez Strait.
Mare Island Gold Course is closed. It once had a disputed claim as the oldest course on the west coast. Got caught by the causeway bridge being up for channel traffic.
Last time I went to Loon Lake was two years ago when we evicted because of a forest fire that started around Pollock Pines and burned all the way into the Tahoe Basin. (The Caldor Fire) This year I decided to make an 1150 mile loop up US395, down 80 to the Bay Area and back over 120 to US 395 and my side of the mountains. A friends wife had died since I was last in Vallejo and I wanted to stop and offer my condolences.
Yosemite
Clouds Rest and Half Dome from Olmstead Point
The only section of 120 still being worked on. East of Olmstead Point with one way traffic. Lower part of Lee Vining Canyon
Having a senior pass makes the 120 route through Yosemite National Park over Tioga Pass free for me so I prefer it to Sonora Pass. I much prefer one of these options to the west side of the Sierra down Interstate 5 or highway 99. I drove from Vallejo to my property at Kennedy Meadows in a day. On the way north I had driven from Kennedy Meadows to Strawberry Point Campground at Icehouse Reservoir on the first day and a short distance to Loon Lake the second. I spent two nights at Loon then two nights in Vallejo.
