Smokey Owens Valley looking east towards Darwin Plateau |
Blue sky at Wildrose Charcoal Kilns at close to 7,000'. |

Traffic counter cable for burros? (They are
supposed to be removing them from Death Valley NP. I saw ten or more on
the road up from Panamint Valley to the the Wildrose Campground. There
was a trap for them last time I was up Trona Wildrose Road but it is
gone now) |
9,064' Wildrose Peak from the 8,100' shoulder of Telescope Peak
(The only summit the wife made with me. She carried her 28 pound miniature
schnauzer Kaiser half way back down from the summit because he ran out of gas) |
I went 100 miles north in the Owens Valley and
it was still terribly smoky. Turned east and spent the night on the Darwin Plateau where
at least I could see some stars. I tried to camp the next night at Mahogany
Flats Campground on the shoulder of Telescope Peak but it was too
crowded. Death Valley and Panamint Valley were full of smoke. I ended up
at Thorndyke Campground which is between the kilns and the campground-trailhead on
the ridge. The insects were horrible and Mya suffered until after
sundown. Her water bowl doubled as a community pool and I was the
lifeguard. The yellow jackets were practicing synchronized swimming and
weren't very good at it. Bailed without breakfast because the yellow
jackets were up early. There are 3 picnic tables just down
Trona-Wildrose Road from Wildrose
Campground where I had breakfast two days in a row. |

If you are coming up
Trona-Wildrose Road from
Panamint Valley it is the first shady place along the road. |
