I wanted to get up around Lee Vining
and Mono Lake before Tioga Pass opened for the season. Turned out
I made it by a week. The pass opened May 21st. Many of the Los Angles
crowd doesn't get past Mammoth Lakes and San Francisco doesn't show up on
my side of the Sierra until the passes open. Sonora was already open but
most tourists prefer Tioga. It snowed on me for two afternoon and
evenings around Deadman Summit so I moved lower towards Mono Lake where
it rained for two afternoons instead. |

The white Whites. Fresh snow on the White
Mountains in the distance. Tufa formations between Test Station Road and
Lee Vining. |

Mono Lake has twice as many island as Lake
Tahoe. You're looking at both of them. |

Lakefront Property. The only one I've found
so far around Mono Lake. |
The snow is more
plentiful north of Bishop than in the higher mountains visible from
US395 south of Bishop, but still light for the season. Tioga pass opened
the weekend after this one on May 21st. Last year I saw two large RVs
parked off Test Station Road before it drops down towards the lake. The
nice views are no longer available since they put large boulders
blocking access to these sites. More public land removed from public
use? |
