Sequoias December 1-8, 2017
Giant Sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum (Wawona))
Finally camped in the Camp Nelson area off Hwy 190 on the west side of the Kern River Sierra.
Sequoias are hard tree to fit in a picture
Campsite 14 in Belnap Campground, Camp Nelson California comes with its own Sequoia
The other campground in the Camp Nelson area was gated shut and posted closed. After being the only one in any of the 15 sites at Belnap I found a piece of paper on the ground claiming the same order closed the one I had stayed in. (It had no gates)
Bridge over the Middle Fork of the Tule River | On Hwy 190 a fox walked in circles then laid down along the road while I stood there |
Coastal Redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens)
The Redwoods along Ferguson-Nacimento Rd are not very large for Redwoods, larger ones are along the Big Sur River further up the coast and the groves get really big north of San Francisco.
Highway 1 along the coast from lower Ferguson-Nacimento Rd | Campsite 3BKirk Creek Campground was a bit windy when the Santa Anas came down the canyon |
Barry met me at Kirk
Creek campground on Tuesday. I had left home Friday and had spent Monday
night in the parking lot of Ponderosa campground about 15 miles before
Kirk on the other side of the 2500' pass. Tuesday night the winds blew
stiff until after midnight and even harder Wednesday night. We moved to
Pfieffer-Big Sur Stae Park for Thursday night. An electronic sign at the
new bridge by the Big Sur Park claimed "Road Closed 38 miles ahead.
NO Detour." Turns out they lie to the tourists, the road through
Hunter-Leggit was open. I learned that Limekiln State Campground isn't. It went private but for some reason they don't seem to know how to replaces signs after years of false advertising. (One year we tried to check out the campground while registered at Big Sur State Campground and were denied access Now I know why.) |
|
Sequoia cones (larger) and Redwood cones with seeds. Pretty small start for the largest and tallest trees on earth.
