Big Sur Area December 4-8, 2016
Plaskett Creek Campground in the trees
Plaskett Rock maybe the far one in the left hand picture.
The stairs to the beach at Plaskett Creek
It was a good thing we had decided to meet at Plaskett Creek because the State Pfeiffer Big Sur Campground was closed as well as the entire Los Padres National Forest in the Big Sur area All roads and hiking trail entrances were barricaded and posted. There had been a big fire in the Big Sur-Carmel area and they had used the campground for the fire fighters. Why the entire Forest is closed I don't know. I heard they didn't have the man power to open it. Public Lands are only accessible to the public if there are armed Federal Rangers to patrol it. I also heard they were worried about debris avalanches but the fire area is not as large as the closed area. Someone said it might open next spring. The order closing it was dated September 2, 2016.
Highway 1 from Nacimiento Road. They left it open for transit only. It will take you from the coast to Highway 101 via Hunter Legit Military Reservation.
Bixby Creek Bridge from the inland side. You were able to drive down the dirt road 1 1/2 miles before the National Forest closure.
