Camp at Independence Creek Campground outside of Independence
California. Used to be $10 a night now $14. Spent two nights for $29.
They offer a senior discount of $80 for 15 days if you get a hold of the
right people somewhere. Even though I was in the shade until afternoon
it was too hot. About 94 in the shade and 103 in the trailer. Trailer never
got below 80 until midnight. Actually the campground is in the Owens
Valley next to the Sierra. |

Fire restriction were in effect even in Fish
Creek and Troy Meadows Campgrounds. (The Southern Sierra
had already had its fair share of big fires this summer) |

The first night I made it as far as the cutoff for the Bitter Creek
Trailhead, I left enough room for somebody to get by me although I
didn't expect anyone to want to. Next morning I was considering moving
down the trailhead road farther. I was exploring another road 100 yards to the north
when I noticed vehicles going past my rig. When I got back there they had
an American flag on a 40' mast and a fuel truck which had Jet-A on it.
They said they were going to be spending the day doing clean up. I
finished exploring the road I had been hiking when they showed up and
decided to move there. By the time I was ready to move the Jeep and trailer they had
another vehicle show up and block the road behind me leading to the
trailhead. Latter the helicopter
came and landed. They made many trips with objects on the end of a long
cable. The next morning I found nothing so they must have trucked
whatever out. |

out of sight) |
The second night at about 7350 feet and with a little cooler weather
in it didn't get above 71 in the shade and about 78 in the trailer. The
fresh water in the trailer still needs work, a cup of tea was terrible.
On Friday I went and got some water out of the spigot at Fish Creek
Campground. Both Fish Creek and Troy Meadows have water, campers and no
fires. Fish Creek had a campground host but at $8.50 a night senior I stayed
at my site a few miles short of Fish Creek Campground. |
