Loon Lake Trip  August 14-20, 2015
The Walker Lake fire started Saturday but was out when I came south Thursday (Between June Lakes Loop and Lee Vining Canyon which leads to Tioga Pass and Yosemite)
The Dana Plateau behind the  fire reaches to about 13,000'
Deadman Creek
Deadman Creek camp Two Tears (In the gap) From my camp San Joaquin Peak or Two Tears were about 3 miles
Upper and lower Deadman Creek Campgrounds had people in them so I camped at the end of Deadman Creek Road. Although no campfires or charcoal outside the campground due to fire restrictions in a dry August, I prefer my dog Mya not have to be chained. The end of the road has two picnic tables and the creek was still running for the dog to play in.
Dry Lake
Although California has been  in a severe drought for years, Dry Lake wasn't. Even what looked like a meadow was swampy. (Off Wright's Lake Road in the Crystal Range)
Loon Lake (Crystal Range)

Cairns built on the drought exposed rocky lakebed. Loon was about 50% capacity Mostly hung around or hiked from camp to avoid the hassles of driving.
The road into Loon Lake was going through a major re-paving project for the last 5 miles or so to the campground. Pilot cars were running every half hour. Kind of put a damper on Jeeping in the vicinity. We did go over to the start of the Rubicon Trail but since my Jeep was less than 2 months old I decided against trying it. Also all the oil and mud in the construction zone didn't make me want to be using it much. On my way out on Wednesday they started paving.
Monitor Pass

Went over Monitor Pass going up to and coming back from Loon Lake. Earlier in the year it had been closed by a fire which did some decent damage to the area around Keenan Lake and the East Fork of the Carson River. They worried about Markleeville at the time but I saw no signs that it got that close.  (Alpine county has about 1,100 residents, Orange county which is about the same size has over 3 million)
