Big Sur (December 3-6, 2015)
View of Hwy 1 hugging the coast viewed form Nacimiento Road
Barry couldn't make the 3rd annual December at Big Sur so my Grandson Tyler agreed to accompany me. Of course my trusty dog Mya came along. The first night we were at San Simeon State Campground, the second Pfeiffer Big Sur State Campground and the third Ventana  Campground in Big Sur. We visited Cambria and Monterey for food , beer and a couple games of pool. Rain at Paso Robles had stopped by Cambria but we had heavy night dew at San Simeon while sleeping out under the stars on cots Thursday night. Barry and I had been planning on staying at the Kirk Creek Federal Campground  (on the ocean side of US 1 but when we drove through it was all reserved with a few occupied. Plaskett Creek, another Federal Campground a short distance south had plenty of  openings on Friday. We wanted two nights a t Big Sur but they had no vacancies for Saturday night so we only got one night and we moved to Ventana up the road. (Actually up the hill and down the road (south)) for Saturday night. They had been closed for some years but had reopened in the last one. They were situated in a really nice redwood forest. A little more expensive then the state park but well worth it with only a few campsites occupied.
Stopped by Bakersfield National Cemetery for the first time    (Fairly new, will serve through this century) Found an old friends marker (Dennis E Soard 1951-2015)

San Simeon creek campground is $24 a night, the upper Washburn campground is $20. Big Sur is $35 a night but comes without the platoons of ticks Mya pick up going from Washburn campground to the beach. We had to wait until we got to Monterey to purchase chemical weapons to fight the war. We pulled dozens off her before resorting to what should have been done as a preventative.

Nacimiento Road
I had always wanted to take Nacimiento Road from the Coast to Paso Robles. It quickly climbs to near 3000' and then down the Nacimiento River through Fort Hunter Liggett. I had always thought Big Sur was the southern most Redwood forest but found redwood all the way up the coast side to the summit. The road out of Kirk Creek is 30 crow fly miles south of Big Sur.
There are a couple of  campground between the summit and Fort Hunter Liggett. There is no leaving the main road or stopping on the base. At times the road is secured but was open when we went through with no delays on a Sunday.
