Sunset behind Manter Fire damage (fire was in 2000) |
I recently found Hawaii too hot, humid and crowded for my
idea of paradise. I needed to get away and recover. Thursday morning in
Monache Meadows at 7900' I had ice in my tea pot. I find a brisk morning
is good for your constitution. Day time highs were in the mid 70's with
humidity about 25%. (Hawaii had been about 90 degrees and 80% humidity).
I saw less than a dozen people in three days compared to Waikiki which
had over 50,000 tourists when I was there. (I didn't see them all
luckily but thousands and thousands are still to many) |

The South Fork of the Kern River is dry at the Kennedy Meadows bridge |
The river had a little water in it at Monache Meadows (12,000'
Olancha Peak in background) |

The spring fed tank at Powell Meadows still has water coming out of it |
I managed to keep Mya from chasing cows but the deer were too great a
temptation |
There were only about a 100 to 150 head of cattle in
Monache Meadows but they often seemed to be my way. Several wanted to
come into my camp and they also liked to congregate along the river. I
had caught a mild case of Guardia years ago down below Kennedy Meadows
which I blame on cattle grazing up steam in Monache Meadows. |
