Owens - Panamint Valley Loop (Jan 28-30, 2014)
Entrance to the Estelle Tunnel (about 10 or 11' wide by about 8 or 9' feet high for the 3500' I went in) |
Weird fluffy white deposits prevalent at least near the start of the tunnel (a light breeze and it's gone) |
The Estelle Tunnel took 15 years, from 1908 to 1923, to blast a horizontal tunnel in a mile and a half to look below the Morning Star Mine whose surface was about 1800' higher in elevation. At about 7600' in they found a silver vein. Fluffy deposits look like they are minerals being leached out and deposited up to three inches or more long. http://explorehistoricalif.com/cerro_mining.html
