Panamint Valley (Jan 13-16, 2014)
Southern Panamint Range from the Argus Range. Geologists love this part of the country, the bones of the mountains are laid bare, at least of vegetation. (a lot of dirt in places though.) An old landscape 540 million years or so. A lot of sedimentary and metamorphic rock, it has been at the bottom of a inland sea and deeper.
Camped near the Whittaker Iron Mine near the base of Slate Crossing in the Panamint Valley for three days. Explored the open pit iron mine and a nearby diatomaceous earth mine as well as Water and Shepherd Canyons. Took daily hikes of about 3 miles, often in rough terrain. Did several Jeep excursions exploring the local area. I believe I could have looped between Water and Shepherd Canyons if it weren't getting late in the day while I was about 7 miles back off Water Canyon. Found the Kopper King Mine Cabin (It's very well maintained)
