Nine Mile Canyon (J41) is the start of the last paved road to cross the Sierra for hundreds of miles. From US 395 the route leads up to Kennedy Meadows across the South Fork Of the Kern, over Sherman Pass at over 9000 feet, down across the Kern River, up through Johnsondale and over the western ridge of the Sierra and down to the San Joaquin Valley around Porterville. The next crossing to the north is over Tioga Pass through Yosemite on Hwy 120 cutting off US 395 at Lee Vining at Mono Lake
