Mount Whitney.... is the highest point in the
contiguous United States at 14,494 feet. By the 21st century it has become such a popular destination that it is getting very hard
to climb because of the permit situation. The have even set up what they call "The Whitney Zone" which is controlled
much tighter than the rest of the neighboring Sierra. You even need a permit to day hike the summit
(which is a very long hike)
