| Being the highest point in the contiguous
United States Mt Whitney is a very popular destination. There are special
restrictions involved with the "Whitney Zone". Even an extremely
hard twenty one mile round trip day hike requires a permit. (It didn't in
1985 but overnight travel did). Day hikes were often popular during the
full moon. A 10.5 mile trail will take you from the Whitney Portal at around 8300'
to the 14,494' summit. There is also and alternate climbers route through
Boy Scout Basin which is also very popular. |
