When we pulled into Hong Kong
I had my personal tour guide, DS2 Leo
Montoya, until he got stationed in a luxury hotel on Shore Patrol. We
started off in the China Fleet Club the ended up on the Wanchi playing
cards with a topless dealer. (I felt guilty because I won
and got a free show) Leo's hotel room impressed me at the time
because it even had a telephone next to the commode. In Hong Kong I even
played tourist and took the tram up Victoria Peak. That was about the
extent of my tourist experience and I spent the rest of my time in the
bars. I remember when sailing into Hong Kong there was a question of whether
we should fly are flag at half mast because of the death of Chiang Kai
Shek (who had died in April of 1975) and being so
close to communist China. I also remember a Russian trawler dipping its
flag and our not responding. The cold war was still on.. Some of
my shipmates got custom tailor made dress blues, tattoos and LED digital
watches. Some sold the watches for a profit the next time we were in
Olongapo because they were new to the Filipinos and they had no idea of
their cost.
(The log of Worden's activities I've been looking at to refresh my memory, claims that in January 1976 we were were in Hong Kong , then Korea, then Sasabo and finally into the yards in Yokosuka for 10 months. I believe we were in Hong Kong in 1975) |

In 2016 while Jackie and I were in northern Iceland there was only one other group at the lodging. Three Chinese woman, one from Toronto and her mother and sister from Hong Kong. The sister still living in Hong Kong said she had worked on the Wanchi. I assume the area is still there. | |
